                     About therapy

Increasingly in our times a lot of people find themselves struggling under the pressures of life and not able to find the way towards resolution of their problems and inner conflicts.

Counselling and psychotherapy provide a safe space where, with the help of a supportive and skilled person, it becomes possible to get in touch with our feelings and thoughts and examine them in the light of the totality of our experience.

There are different modalities of therapy but it is generally agreed that the safe and respectful relationship with a therapist, in which we can be really heard and understood, is the foundation on which the change can be built. It is the support, empathic listening and being able to talk about what is important for us that the therapeutic process is catalysed by. This may allow us to process unresolved feelings, achieve higher awareness of ourselves and arrive at the place from where we are able to make desired changes in our behaviour and start creating our lives in a free and conscious way.

About EMDR Therapy

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a powerful and dynamic approach used to process trauma, both simple and complex.

When trauma happens, because of its overwhelming nature, our brains are not able to process the information, as it happens with regular events.
This causes traumatic memories to be stored in our brains in isolation, in a fragmented form. As a result the old traumatic memory keeps getting triggered and causes us to re-experience original disturbing emotions and bodily sensations. Trauma also impacts on our self-beliefs, which doesn't have to be conscious. E.g. it may make us belief that we are defective, not loveable, unsafe or always at fault.

During EMDR Therapy we are made to think about traumatic scenario while our body is subjected to certain types of stimulation (it may be eye movement, tapping on both sides of the body or sounds delivered intermittently to both ears). This bilateral stimulation prompts a spontaneous event of traumatic material being processed through different parts in our brains. As a result of successful processing, the memory (or scary future scenario) doesn't feel distressing any more and it looses its debilitating grip on the person. Another effect is transformation of negative self-beliefs into more healthy, objective and empowering ones
.

I believe that we are impacted on in our lives by a variety of forces and it is vital to be able to acknowledge all aspects of our experience: traumatic events, family dynamics, childhood memories as well as cultural, political, historical and social factors.
